I hope that you and I will always be the kind of friends who can sit together quietly and just be, and know that we'll be okay even when things feel hard. I appreciate this so much right now. And yeah, sorry I've let our own email thread drop. But I bet you get it without me having to say anything. Thanks for just being you.
This resonated with me deeply. I received a diagnosis of depression this year but I've thought about how I feel often in terms of burnout too. That sense of reduced capacity is so very familiar. It's maddening to me to bump up against my limits so hard and so often. This is what I wrote about my own experience of feeling decreased safety (for very different reasons) and the resulting impact on my mental health: https://notjustmyown.substack.com/p/did-my-adopted-kids-give-me-adhd?r=1ezccm
Thanks so much for reading and sharing your experience, Gretchen. I find it fascinating that some people are born with their neurodivergence and some people develop it later (cPTSD is one example of this). A lot of us are feeling burnout and overwhelm right now. Best of luck!
I agree: the nuances around congenital brain differences and neurodivergence that’s environmentally based are rich for study. What’s really intriguing me right now are the generationally genetic, epigenetic and in utero environmental effects on brain function and neurodivergence. The more I learn about all of these things, the more discouraged I feel about my kids’ opportunities to live healthy lives but I believe the research in this area could also have beneficial information that we can use to counteract those negative affects.

I really appreciate your friendship and understanding, Robin. Thank you.
